Man is at the center of the universe and the sun rotates around him followed by the moon. Well, this might be an overstatement (an understatement for the chosen few). But in our own story, we are definitely the Hero.
Now as a fellow Hero I just want to say I hear you! We are all going through our quests and we have our own dragons to slay. Like any journey, it is unique for every but there is an algorithm or a pattern if you may behind every journey. Let me take you on a journey which describes all the journey ever made or will ever be made. The journey of You a Hero.
The Ordinary World:
This is the world in which you reside cozying up on a sofa or a chair while reading this article. It is a safe zone you know the ins and outs of this world. By observing you in this world someone can understand your capabilities and outlook about the world.
The Call To Adventure:
You are leading a perfect life. Suddenly something happens your favorite sofa is missing. This disrupts your life and challenges you to venture out and either search for the sofa or buys a new one. Refusal of The Call:
Aah! who will go outside and get the sofa back? Look it’s raining. You refuse to go on your sofa journey.
Meeting The Mentor
You look at the corner of the room and you see your dog/cat searching for the sofa to sleep in his favorite spot. This motivates you and you suddenly remember your friend who has just bought a new sofa. You seek his guidance asking whether the sofa is any good, where is the shop located, will it be open now.
Crossing the threshold:
Now you are pumped up and have sufficient knowledge for the quest. You step outside your house into the unfamiliar world. Let’s spice things up and call this the Extraordinary world.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies:
Outside in the alley, you realize that you have left your mobile at home(but somehow you are still able to read this ). You must rely on others for directions. You will have to trust strangers and follow their directions as they become your Allies in your quest. This journey to the shop is filled with traps the potholes the wrong turns everything tests you.
Approach to the innermost cave:
Finally, you have found the shop. Your quest has come to the final stage. But this is the most crucial and dangerous stage.
Now you are looking at a wide array of sofas. Each one looks more enticing than the last one. Now for most of us, the tradeoff between the need and the money in our pocket is the biggest Ordeal. Seeing the price tags you start having doubts. Maybe come back next month when there is more money in the pocket. But you remember you’re cat/dog and fight this Ordeal. You settle for a sofa which is neither the coziest nor the most costly.
Reward: You have the sofa you needed.
Now you must go back to your house. Having come out you have gained new insights and a new sofa. But the Hero’s journey is not yet over and he may still need one last push back into the Ordinary World. This push is “How will you take the sofa back?”Luckily the shop delivers it to your doorstep thus you are saved.
This is the climax in which the Hero must have his final and most dangerous encounter with death. The final battle also represents something far greater than the Hero’s own existence with its outcome having far-reaching consequences to his Ordinary World and the lives of those he left behind. I am not able to fill it in this quest of yours, if you can fill this plothole then do write in the comment section. Thanks in advance
Return With Elixir:
You reach your house along with the sofa. You see your dog/cat running towards you jumping in excitement on seeing the new sofa. Ultimately You will return to where he started but things will clearly never be the same again.
Now I know the sofa was not big enough of a quest. I could have started an imaginary company or save a princess. But this is the story “Crisis of Sofa and the rise of the hero from his couch!” .Don’t worry your quest has not ended now you must face a new danger and evolve along the way.
The journey of the hero is about the courage to seek the depths; the image of creative rebirth; the eternal cycle of change within us; the uncanny discovery that the seeker is the mystery which the seeker seeks to know. The hero journey is a symbol that binds, in the original sense of the word, two distant ideas, the spiritual quest of the ancients with the modern search for identity, always the one, shape-shifting yet marvelously constant story that we find.Phil Cousineau
